E. Maurice & Co., Paris, France, for Shreve, Crump & Low, Boston, mantel clock, 8 day, time and strike, spring driven pendule de Paris movement with visible Brocot escapement on an molded octagonal base with gilt brass and red marble ovolo molding supporting a central column with the Greek muses cast with relief from patinated metal, supporting a molded octagonal capital upon which rests a drum head of black slate holding the movement, bezel, and polished black slate dial with incised Roman numerals and gilt hands.
CONDITION:
Gilding has worn off of much of the brass moldings in spots. Remarkably, the stone case and moldings have almost no chips. Cast metal column with figures is in very good condition. Retailer name on the sunken portion of the dial is just barely visible. Polished black slate dial is excellent. Good hands and beveled glass. The black slate case parts could use some cleaning. The movement is signed "E.M." and strikes on a bell. The Muses were Greek goddesses who ruled over the arts and sciences and offered inspiration in those subjects. This clock is heavy if shipping is a consideration.
